Waterproof Jewellery: Can You Wear It in the Shower?
Share
"Waterproof jewellery shower me pehen sakte hain?" We get this question on WhatsApp almost every day. People see the word waterproof on a listing and expect to swim, bathe and do dishes without taking anything off.
Here is the honest answer, the same one we give our customers.
The short answer
Our stainless steel jewellery is fine with hand washing, sweat, light rain and splashes of water. The steel base does not rust and it does not go black like brass.
But we suggest you take it off before a shower, a bath or a swim. Not because water will ruin it in one go, but because the shower is not only water.
Why the shower is different from washing your hands
When you wash your hands, your jewellery meets plain water for a few seconds. In the shower, it meets a lot more:
- Soap and body wash. They leave a thin film that dulls the shine over time.
- Shampoo and conditioner. These have chemicals that are harder on gold plating than water.
- Hot water and steam. Heat speeds up wear on any plating.
- Hard water. In many Indian cities, tap water leaves white marks on metal once it dries.
So a piece that is labelled waterproof will survive the shower, but it will keep its shine longer if it skips the shower.
What "waterproof" means on our listings
When a MONOZO listing says waterproof, it means the stainless steel base will not rust or tarnish from everyday water contact. For example, the Diamond Solitaire Necklace and the Flat Chain Bracelet are both listed as waterproof, and both are stainless steel with gold plating.
It does not mean the gold plating is permanent under any condition. No plating is.
Two exceptions:
- Copper jewellery is not waterproof. Our copper kadas and the stone rings with a copper base should be kept dry.
- Necklace and earring sets. These are listed as waterproof and sweatproof, but the care note says avoid water and perfume. To keep the shine, take them off before a bath.
Water situations, one by one
| Situation | Stainless steel, gold plated | Copper-base stone rings | Pure copper kada |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washing hands | Fine | Better to remove | Better to remove |
| Sweat on a hot day | Fine, wipe after | Wipe after | Wipe after, may darken |
| Light rain | Fine, dry after | Dry after | Dry after |
| Shower or bath | Take off | Take off | Take off |
| Swimming pool or sea | Take off | Take off | Take off |
| Washing utensils | Take off rings and bracelets | Take off | Take off |
What to do if your jewellery gets wet
Forgot to take it off? Do not worry. This is what to do:
- Pat it dry with a soft cloth straight away. Do not leave it to dry on its own in the bathroom.
- If it went through soap or shampoo, rinse quickly with plain water first, then dry.
- Leave it on a dry cloth for a few minutes so water inside the clasp and links dries out.
- Store it in a box only when it is completely dry.
One wet day will not spoil a stainless steel piece. It is the daily habit that matters.
Sweat and the Indian summer
Sweat is the water most of us deal with every day. In May and June, a chain bracelet can be damp for hours. Our stainless steel pieces handle this well, but wipe them with a dry cloth when you take them off in the evening. Salt from sweat left on metal overnight is what slowly dulls the finish.
Monsoon, Holi and wedding season
Some times of the year need a little extra care.
Monsoon. Getting caught in the rain is fine for stainless steel. The problem is the damp that follows. Dry your pieces as soon as you reach home and keep them in a closed box, not on an open tray.
Holi. Take everything off before you step out. Colours, water balloons and scrubbing afterwards are a lot for any plating, and gulal gets stuck in chain links and clasps.
Haldi and mehendi functions. Haldi paste is sticky and stains. Remove rings and bracelets before the ceremony, and wipe your necklace and earrings with a soft cloth afterwards.
Our advice for daily wear
If you want jewellery you can forget about during the day, pick stainless steel. Browse our waterproof necklaces and anti-tarnish bracelets, check the material on each listing, and keep the shower as your one daily break. For copper, see the care notes in our copper kada collection before you buy.
FAQs
Kya ye jewellery paani me kharab hoti hai?
No, our stainless steel jewellery does not get spoiled by hand washing or light water. Copper pieces are different and should be kept dry.
Can I wear waterproof jewellery in the shower every day?
We suggest you do not. Soap, shampoo and hot water dull the gold plating faster. Take it off before your bath and put it back on once you are dry.
Can I swim with waterproof jewellery?
Please do not. Chlorine in pools and salt in sea water are rough on any plating. Remove it before swimming.
Is waterproof jewellery also sweatproof?
Our stainless steel pieces handle normal sweat well. Wipe them dry when you take them off so salt does not sit on the metal overnight.
